How to mitigate your mobile phone use

Avstängningsknapp

Improve the electromagnetic environment or get rid of your mobile phone addiction. Children imitate adults' behaviour, not their words. Set a good example!

Although there is nothing that can make a mobile phone environmentally friendly, you can always minimise the damage. Consider the people who live closest to mobile phone masts. The fewer wireless connections a phone has, the fewer masts are needed. As there are many different models of mobile phones, you need to search online to find out how to make yours more environmentally friendly. When you see my model, this means you should replace it with your phone's model name and then the suggested search terms. Sometimes, there is also a reference to 'Settings'.

Soft start

Turn off everything that happens automatically. Apps that you don't use don't need to be updated. Location services cuts off the main information source for diagnostics and adverts to send and receive data about your mobile usage and your current location.

Emails are sent and received manually.

Switch off or delete whatever you can. This includes apps that track you (your phone) and others. Delete free apps that you don't use, they are free because they send data about you.

A bit tougher

Watching videos and listening to music uses up a lot of network bandwidth. If you are doing so wirelessly, do not watch films or listen to music that is streamed. This is because streaming means that sound and images are retrieved as you watch or listen. To watch and listen offline, download the content via a cable connection first. Make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are turned off. Don't use wireless headphones. If you find it difficult to avoid streaming, you could get a subscription with minimal data, or a pay-as-you-go card with no data. You can then buy data when you really need it. If your mobile phone is connected via a cable, you can stream and surf as much as you like; it won't emit mobile radiation or use up your data allowance.

Tough

Turning off mobile data will also turn off the internet, because now there should be no unnecessary radiation. This applies even to short tasks such as mobile payments. Now, only phone calls and text messages will work. It's a matter of getting used to giving up some of the convenience that new technology provides. However, email and mobile payments will work if the mobile phone has a wired internet connection.

Even tougher

Your mobile phone is switched off. You will miss calls, but you can call people back when you are in a position to put your phone down at arm's length and talk via a headset with an air tube. This may annoy your friends and acquaintances, but you'll get to experience what you missed out on as a 'mobile zombie'.

When the going gets tough. The tough get going

You don't have a mobile phone. Card terminals for payment can have wireless connectivity.
Cash is king.
